SiteAdvisor to Surf Wiser
For the n00bs who don’t know, McAfee’s SiteAdvisor has been released for some time now. It’s a plugin for your browser that integrates with search results provided by Google, Yahoo!, or MSN. If a website is unsafe, you will see a red icon and if you point to it, it’ll show you what you will be getting yourself into by clicking on the link. The plugin includes an icon that shows up in your browser’s toolbar, which gives you an option to view site details. Within the site details, you can see the approximate amount of visitors, comments about the site, downloads, cookies, and more safety information. The only thing I don’t like about it is that the toolbar does not integrate well in IE7. If you’re still using IE6, it’ll fit right in, but with IE7, it’ll be a separate toolbar, which you can hide and still have safe search results. I think it’s good in Firefox, too.
Here’s an example site details page: http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/uwaterloo.ca/summary/
Check out a bad site analysis: http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/porn.com/summary/ – A user thought that they could get free stuff, but was charged $15.
Don’t worry, puissance.ca is safe. And if you’re interested in more of this security stuff, check out their blog: http://blog.siteadvisor.com/. They talk about typosquatters installing toolbars through exploits, the dangers of MySpace, and why puissance.ca is so good. Well, they didn’t say the last point, but maybe someday.
And if you want to know some more about domain name squatters, read about domain name ninjas at Chhaitea.com.
