Defeating Tonsil Stones
Tonsil stones or tonsilloliths are those off-white, odor-causing leftover food particles stuck in your tonsil crevasses. They remind me of Toblerone nougats, except that they don’t taste or smell good. It is basically bacteria and it is one cause of bad breath. Mints can over cover up the smell, but because it is lodged in the tonsils, it’s best to avoid getting them. These tonsil stones have been randomly forming in my tonsils before, but after I changed my oral care and cleaning methods, I am no longer getting them. If you get tonsil stones and don’t want them anymore, feel free to try this. If do not get tonsil stones, these can be general oral hygiene tips.
- Go electric and buy an electric toothbrush – they clean much better and it’s fun
- I use the Oral B Vitality. Order a $3.00 off coupon from Save.ca, then go to Shoppers Drug Mart ($19.99)
- Buy and use dental floss every night to get food particles out – go between all your teeth
- Follow proper brushing methods (using toothpaste)
- There is no need to push down hard or scrub with an electric toothbrush
- Clean the outside first, one tooth at a time by moving toothbrush slowly across teeth
- Clean the inside, one tooth at a time by moving toothbrush slowly across teeth
- Clean the top of your teeth by doing the same as above
- Brush the roof of your mouth as well
- Lastly, brush your tongue as it has the most plaque
- Make sure that you brush for at least 2 minutes – toothbrush will stutter to indicate that
- Rinse well
I also noticed that dairy and citrus foods cause filmy substance, so make sure you get all that film out before going to bed. And during the day, stay hydrated, so you always have a good flow of saliva. If you floss, brush, and stay hydrated, tonsil stones should not appear anymore.
