Advantages of Co-operative Education
Co-operative education has been around for some time and is gaining popularity. Universities and colleges are beginning to offer more and more co-operative education programs. Students enrolled in co-op alternate between school terms and work terms, increasing knowledge and earning work experience. Students are evaluated in school based on academic performance and also at their workplace based on work performance. What are the advantages?
1) Alternation reduces dullness of continuous schooling
Participating in 5 courses per term continuous over a 4 year period can be boring. With co-op, students get new experiences.
2) Students get work experience
Working every four months allows the students to apply their knowledge in real work situations. It also adds to their resume.
3) Students earn money
Tuition fees and residence expenses are quite high these days, but with co-op, students will be able to pay for their own tuition fees.
4) Meet new people
Going on co-op is a chance to network and develop communication skills. Students get to meet new people at the workplace and while commuting. It’s a chance to see the business environment.
5) Develop relationships with employers
As students of a school, the reputation of the school is in the hands of the students. Not only do students develop relationships with employers, students can help the university achieve a better reputation. For example, the picture you see reveals my enthusiasm for my previous employer. I’ve had an excellent learning experience, I’ve met great people, and I’ve had a lot of fun.
Overall, students will have very impressive resumes. Students graduate from their post secondary institutions full of academic knowledge and work experience being ever-ready to join the workforce.
