3 Reasons to Use Ubuntu
I have decided to move from Gentoo Linux to another distribution. I have blogged about Gentoo before, talking about how it took me so long to get it working. I still have it on dual-boot, but I always use Windows now.
I’m switching because I want something simpler that will totally replace Windows. I personally won’t be switching to Ubuntu, but since I did some research on it, here are some reasons to switch to Ubuntu:
1) User Friendliness
It is designed to be user-friendly, like the Windows Operating system. It includes Open Office and other useful applications. It should work “right out of the box.” However, there won’t be a box since you’ll be downloading it, which is very convenient. It is accessible and free. Anyone can download it, install it, and take advantage of open source software. Overall, it’s quick, simple, and very usable.
2) Large Community
Secondly, Ubuntu has large community. There will certainly be a lot of noobs with noob questions posting on the forums. Thus, solutions to problems can easily be found by searching the forums. The community is huge and very supportive; you can find help on the IRC channel or on their forums.
3) Popularity
Lastly, Ubuntu is becoming very popular. Dell sells their computers with the option of having Ubuntu pre-installed now. As it becomes mainstream, it’s best to become familiar with it.
It’s amazing how open source software develops. Not many games are compatible with linux, but if you don’t game, then linux is a free alternative that is capable of doing everything else. Try it for yourself.
