  OMG! i totally agree with you!! they shuld put more money into fixing the damn TTC system, instead of increasing their wage!!

  doesn't matter really what their starting wages are, if you come to think of it, their dealing with people for long periods of time,and yes that's common in a lot of job,but .that's not the main reason their going on strike. their going on strike to be compensated for what happens to them, when people harass them on their job.if you look at the bigger picture instead of just looking at the wages, people would understand why they want to strike.

  if you were in their position and worked for the TTC and know the issues, you would probably want to do the same.

  They should use the money to implement a zero tolerance harassment policy. If being harassed is not in their job description, figure out a way to remove harassment from their job. They should hire a task force to do just that. Moreover, not all employees are being harassed. I see ticket collectors chilling all the time, treating customers poorly. Only some suffer from harassment, so everyone shouldn't be compensated in such ways. Harassment is of vital importance. They shouldn't be compensated through monetary means, harassment needs to be eliminated.They deal with people, but it's part of their job to serve people. If they can't do it well, again, they shouldn't be compensated for it. They could also fund their training programs (or create one) and improve customer service through that. Training is an investment in employees and it is definitely a benefit.The impact of a TTC strike is huge. It damages the economy and it congests traffic; it's a very powerful bargaining tool.

  Another spin which seems to be largely overlooked is the supreme power of the union. Personally, it's an archaic means for organized labour to defend the "downtrodden" proletariat from being exploited by the capitalist pigs. I won't deny that unions have served their purpose quite handily, but the days are over when the police are called in to break strikes by fire hose and nightstick. Essentially, all the rights that unions were created for are enshrined in most labour laws worldwide – unless you live in the third world then anything goes. On the flipside, with this impervious union shield, this means employees don't have to take time to be courteous. Unless they are doing something heinous (e.g. stealing money or assaulting customers) they are fine. As far as harassment, the TTC have implemented a zero tolerance approach. It is called the apathetic TTC Special Constable. The job is mainly reactive and does not prevent harassment. Handy eh?

There are also times when the union gives away their own bargaining rights by signing certain contracts, leaving their own members with less power. It's absurd, but it has happened. Every union is different though.I totally forgot about the TTC Special Constables probably because I don't see them at work. They should definitely look into doing something proactive instead to better protect their workers.I'm glad that this has generated some interesting comments. Thanks.
