Have you seen people use their fingers to block one ear when singing? Have you ever wondered why they do that?

I may have an answer. Singers performing on stage need to hear their own voice and they are pressing their in-ear monitor into their ears for a snugger fit. Most professional singers who perform on stage use in-ear monitors, devices that are usually transparent or skin-coloured. These devices allow them to hear their performance along with the mix (of other instruments/voices). Thus, just when a singer is about to sing a difficult run, you may notice the finger in the ear.

What about singers who are not on stage or wearing in-ear monitors and are blocking their ears? I would have to ask, “Is that singer a professional?” Most likely, such a singer is blocking the ear to appear professional. It would be mostly for style and not very practical. Blocking the ear does not allow you to hear how your voice sounds to others, but it does lower the volume of unwanted noise. To hear how you sound without monitoring, the best way is to use your hands and cup behind your ears with your palms facing forward, angled toward your face.

So there you have it. Blocking the ear does not make you sound better or allow you to hear how your voice sounds to others. It simply blocks out noise.

Out with the old and in with the new! The old media centre that I built in 2006 is long gone with a bad motherboard and an old Celeron processor. Although overclocked, I can’t believe that I used a Celeron processor. It’s now at the electronics dump. The new home theatre PC was built over a year ago, but I made sure that it had HDMI capabilities with a low wattage 64-bit dual core processor. Fortunately, it can still decode 1080p without lag. It’s running Windows 7 x64 with RAID 0 on the OS partition and RAID 1 on the Data partition. Now with a new LCD television, it was about time for a new setup. I didn’t have a sound system, but my dad had a Yamaha AX-570 receiver and a pair of old school Tannoy Oxford speakers. It looks like a decent setup with a mixture of old and new components. Here are the pictures. I’m not going to include any captions because I think you’ll know which is which. Cool, eh?

As you can see below, it’s a really nice setup and I think the speaker placement works well. Of course, the HDTV affords better colour, resolution, and does justice to the capabilities of newer PC components and of course, Windows 7, which is taking the Media Center experience even further. So whether I feel like watching a film, surfing the web, playing texas hold'em or just checking out some TV on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I’m well-prepared.

TVB recently did a Sunday Report on a cappella groups and vocal percussion (beatboxing). To summarize, it said that a cappella is gaining popularity among youths in Hong Kong. I wish a cappella was more popular in North America, but it’s all about the mainstream music here. A friend of mine told me that my video was on TV, so my brother found it online and sent it to me. In the report, it mentions that the interviewee practiced for 3 hours a day while in school. That is a lot of practicing and if you want to learn how to beatbox, that’s what it takes. Props to Rahzel for pioneering the “beatboxing and singing at the same time” technique. The report also featured my If Your Mother Only Knew Tutorial and the interviewee said that it took him a long time just to learn a phrase. Well, I’m glad that I could help. Maybe I should make a Cantonese version of the tutorial.

My video was only on there for a few seconds, but it’s cool that people are learning from it. Check out the full report at the link below. My video appears around 9 minutes.

My YouTube Channel consists of many beatboxing and random videos. Apparently, YouTube Insight reveals that it attracts a predominately male audience. This makes sense because the beatboxing scene is mostly male. I have a video of someone singing a Chinese song that I recorded from television and the male-female viewer ratio for that particular video is about 1:1. Videos with singing or a full band have more female viewers than beatboxing videos. I didn’t even bother looking at my random videos.

My goal is to achieve a more balanced audience. Seriously, too many dudes are watching me, haha. As a result, upcoming videos will have less beatboxing and more singing. Will there be less clothes you ask? You wish! I prefer to keep my videos at a G rating. So stay tuned!

You get to read the whole book, but they are split into parts that take only about 5 minutes to read. I selected The Time Machine by H.G. Wells and I’m already on my 10th part out of 38. I chose to have my RSS feed come in at 6 AM, so I can read while I eat my breakfast. And if one part is not enough, you can simply click on a link and it will bring you the next part.
Being unintelligent, I watched the entire movie, Babel, without subtitles. The first scene was in Morocco with people speaking in Arabic (at least I think it’s in Arabic). I was thinking to myself, “I don’t understand any of this, what a boring movie… I guess the purpose of the movie is to be confusing, but understandable by the end.” So I sat through the entire movie not understanding what was spoken or signed (by the Japanese woman and her friends). Nevertheless, to my surprise, I understood the movie and was able to grasp the storyline. It has been well constructed. Each of the four stories were linked together, but I did not fully understand how the Japanese story connected with the others, apart from the picture and the fact that it was on the news, which symbolizes globalization. Then I re-watched the scene near the end with subtitles where the man was speaking with the cop. It finally made sense. Overall, the movie is great because there are multiple themes. And even with the language barriers, I was able to understand the movie. You get a glimpse of other cultures and lifestyles. In addition, it reveals underlying human behaviours and emotions. Definitely, there is more to the movie and a lot more to discuss. To me, it’s a drama that was interesting, but still boring. I would prefer watching comedies, but this one was a good intermittent change.
